The making
of Epice Skincare products
By Michael S. Spicer, MD
I have always been interested in skin care and the number of different skin care regimens I have come across in my 20 years of Dermatology. Very little is taught in medical school, and residency about the care of normal skin. We learn about skin care for rosacea, eczema, acne prone and diseased skin but what about the rest of us with normal skin. The last 10 years I have worked with aestheticians and skin care companies who focus on skin care and it seems like a world apart from Dermatology. I found myself in a unique position of having a strong background in the ultrastructure of the skin with my board certification in Dermatopathology, a degree in Biochemistry to understand the interaction of biochemical that make up the skin and their interaction with each other, and most importantly my experience and learning the world of aesthetic skin care.
Choosing the right components
There
are so many skin care products on the market I decided to break common brands
down component by component. I worked with a team that consisted of a chemist,
skin care formulator and an aesthetician.
We looked at what was “fluff” and what was active, what worked
individually and what worked synergistically.
Something could be considered fluff by itself but when combined with
another component increased the efficacy of both components into active
agents. And so it began, I realized that
there was not much difference between many of the products that I would
consider generic skin care. Some had
more fluff than others and some had components that helped with marketing but
there were a few that seemed more effective and that is where I focused my
research. These were the products that I
recommended, and still recommend in my practice; products that have mounds of
research and lots of financial support to end up on the retail shelves. But I would recommend a cleanser from brand
A, a moisturizer from brand B, an exfoliant from brand C, and an eye cream from
brand D etc.
So my goal was to make what I considered to be the most effective, healthy skin care line available.
